Activations

Warrant Service in Guadalupe with ATF

In August, the Special Enforcement Team assisted the ATF with a warrant service in the 4800 block of Sanchez Drive in Guadalupe. The suspect had federal warrants for the sale and manufacture of firearms. The warrant was served successfully with SET, Crisis Negotiations Team (CNT), ATF, and Santa Maria Police Department (utilizing their exterior drone capabilities).

Stabbing Suspect Apprehended in Goleta

In August, Goleta Patrol deputies were dispatched to the 5900 block of Encina Road. A female suspect stabbed a male victim. The male was transported to a local hospital; however, the female barricaded inside an apartment. After unsuccessful negotiations with the suspect, SET breached the front door. The suspect was immediately located inside the apartment and taken into custody without incident.

The Special Enforcement Team may be activated day or night, 365 days per year.  SET prides itself on the successful execution of any task they are assigned.  SET’s mission-readiness and capabilities would not be possible without the equipment and training so graciously acquired through the efforts of the Santa Barbara Special Enforcement Team Support Foundation, Inc.

SBSET Support Foundation Fundraiser - Pistol Course

In July, the SBSET Support Foundation hosted a “Couples Pistol Shooting Course.” The attendees brought their own firearms and ammunition and spent the day covering firearms fundamentals and shooting various drills. The enthusiasm was on “high” and everyone, including SET members, had an outstanding time. The weather was definitely warm, but the team appreciated seeing everyone having fun and shooting well.

The SBSET Support Foundation looks forward to hosting additional shooting courses in the future! If you would like the Support Foundation to host a particular shooting course, please reach out to: matt@sbsetfoundation.org

Equipment

Rifles

The team recently received two rifles from Cobalt Kinetics to test and evaluate.  One is chambered in 6mm ARC and the other in 5.56x45mm NATO.  The 5.56 caliber is still the “go-to” round; however, the 6mm ARC round is beginning to gain more traction.  Ammunition chambered in 6mm ARC offers long-range performance but not at the weight of a rifle chambered in 308 Winchester.

The 6mm ARC rifle is part of the Special Purpose Rifle (SPR) series. It is claimed to be capable of “sub MOA” accuracy right out of the box. The upper receiver group is redesigned to incorporate a better locking system for the barrel and hand guard. The reverse-threaded barrel nut seats the barrel evenly and provides more thread engagement than traditional externally threaded receiver extensions. The barrel extension seating surface is able to be machined to a tighter tolerance as a result of the reverse threaded system and allows the barrel to use 100% of its potential accuracy (that would normally be diminished by Mil-Spec receiver extensions that have high spots). The free-floated handguard is then affixed to the upper receiver via a 4-point (8-screw) mounting system that attaches right to the extended portion of the upper (which houses the new barrel nut). This creates a complete upper receiver system that will produce accurate results time after time. It also offers the best features of a monolithic upper receiver group without the drawbacks of the traditional examples found in the market. The test unit SET received comes with a Proof Research carbon fiber barrel for accuracy and lighter weight.

The Cobalt Kinetics rifle chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO comes with an MLOK handguard, a mid-length stainless steel barrel, a Radian charging handle, a Geissele two-stage trigger, and B5 Systems grip and buttstock. SET looks forward to testing out the Cobalt Kinetics rifles.
